4J Studios, the developer behind the legacy console editions of Minecraft, has announced it has opened a new studio in Edinburgh to continue work on its voxel-based sandbox title, Reforj.

The details:

  • As reported by The Scotsman, the Dundee-based developer has now opened a new office in Edinburgh with its staff “focused on software and design roles.” The company is now holding a recruitment drive to locate new employees for the studio, adding to its current 50-person workforce. “The development of Reforj has been gathering pace for several months now, and 20 years on from Chris [van der Kuyl] and I launching the studio, this is as exhilarating a time as we can remember for the firm,” said 4J Studios chief executive Paddy Burns.
  • 4J is currently working on Reforj, a voxel-based multiplayer sandbox with a focus on building, exploring, and surviving that separates itself from Minecraft by offering tools that allow players to reshape the world’s traditional cube-shaped building blocks. The studio has also launched the “Pioneer Program,” in which hundreds of Minecraft players are invited to play Reforj to gather feedback, allowing fans to shape the game’s future.
  • The developer is best known for developing older versions of Minecraft for consoles, such as the Xbox 360, PS3, Nintendo Switch, Wii U, and PS Vita. While the “legacy” editions of Minecraft have been phased out in favor of the cross-platform “Bedrock” version, they remain some of the most beloved versions of Minecraft among fans.
