Mewgenics, the unique cat-breeding indie title from Binding of Isaac creators Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel, has surpassed one million copies sold in just one week after release.

The details:

  • Glaiel confirmed the milestone on social media with a piece of artwork created by artist “Whom.” In another post, the developer shared that the game had 400,000 wishlists on Steam prior to release, which shot up to 600,000 following the release of reviews. However, Glaiel noted that only a portion of players who wishlist a game typically purchase the title during the first week, causing him and McMillen to be “blindsided” by the achievement.
  • According to Alinea Analytics analyst Rhys Elliott, Mewgenics has generated an estimated $25 million USD in revenue so far, making it the second-highest grossing game of 2026. The indie title only trails Team Ninja’s Nioh 3, which notably carries a AAA price tag of $70 compared to Mewgenics’ $30.
  • Glaiel previously revealed that the game made back its entire development budget in only three hours and had surpassed 250,000 copies sold in 12 hours. This is especially impressive given that the game was originally announced in 2012, canceled in 2016, revived in 2018, and then eight years later in 2026.
  • Console ports of Mewgenics are now officially in development with no expected release date revealed. DLC content and additional localization options are also in the works.
