Larian has no plans for Baldur's Gate 3 DLC or a sequel and will move away from Dungeons & Dragons
Larian Studios CEO Swen Vinke has confirmed that there are no plans for future Baldur's Gate game or expansion releases and that the developer is stepping away from the Dungeons & Dragons franchise with its next release.
The details:
Vinke revealed at GDC 2024 (via PC Gamer) that, despite the massive success of Baldur's Gate 3, Larian would not be releasing any additional content for the RPG or working on a fourth mainline entry. It will instead be working on an entirely new project. "Baldur's Gate will always have a warm spot in our heart. We'll forever be proud of it, but we're not gonna continue in it,” the director said. “We're not gonna make new expansions, which everybody is expecting us to do. We're not gonna make Baldur's Gate 4, which everyone is expecting us to do. We're gonna move on - we're gonna move away from D&D and start making a new thing.”
Vinke stated that since it was moving on from the IPs, it was now up to Wizards of the Coast to decide which developer would take over the Baldur's Gate franchise, which was originally developed by Mass Effect studio BioWare.
Larian has always taken pride in being an independent studio, with the CEO criticizing publishers for their "greed" following mass layoffs in recent years. Vinke later stated that he had specifically called out companies that "try to double their revenue year after year" and, when these unrealistic goals are not met, have dropped their staff in an attempt to reduce losses.
