Itch.io is "re-indexing" free NSFW content as it seeks alternative payment processors for paid games

Indie storefront Itch(.)io has confirmed that it is beginning to relist NSFW content after it was pulled from the platform due to pressure from external payment processors. However, paid content has not returned as of yet.

The details:

  • Last week, it was announced that Itch had “de-indexed” all NSFW content after it was pressured by payment processors such as PayPal, Visa, and Stripe due to various games violating their terms of service. A similar situation occurred with Valve’s Steam last month, with Australian pressure group Collective Shout claiming that it had been in contact with the payment processors to attempt to tackle games that “normalized violence and abuse of women.”
  • Itch has now confirmed that NSFW content will now be returning to the platform, but that only free games will be available at first. In the update to developers, platform founder Leaf Corcoran explained that it was still in discussions with payment partners to begin reintroducing paid content “slowly.”
  • Corcoran confirmed that one of the site’s longtime partners, Stripe, has confirmed that it will no longer be able to offer “pay by card” payments to Itch after a decade, as it is unable to support content “designed for sexual gratification” due to its banking partners. As a result, Itch is now attempting to secure at least one new payment processor to ensure the platform is not “at risk.”
  • A new content warning system is also being implemented on the platform, requiring creators to clearly warn potential buyers of the adult content that is included in their game.
