After teasing that a remake of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag was on the way earlier this year, Edward Kenway actor Matt Ryan has revealed that Ubisoft was not too impressed and had threatened him with legal action.

The details:

  • In June, Ryan hinted to fans at a convention that a remake could be coming soon by saying that they should replay the game but that he could not elaborate on why. While not an official confirmation, rumors of a Black Flag remake have been circulating for years, and it was noted that Ryan likely wasn’t aware he was being recorded, lending more trust to the hint.
  • In a new video posted to TikTok (via The Hidden One on X), Ryan has now confirmed at another convention that he was indeed unaware that he was being recorded and that he “doesn’t know” anything about the remake. He also revealed that Ubisoft reportedly threatened him with legal action due to the situation. “I was being very free and open, but I didn’t know that they actually were recording me on their phone,” Ryan explained. “And then the company threatened to sue me. Yeah, so I say nothing.”
  • A remake of Black Flag was first reported to be in development back in 2023, with Skull and Bones developer Ubisoft Singapore said to have been involved, as the game originally began as a spin-off of Black Flag. The project was said to still be a few years away at the time, and it’s claimed that development is still ongoing.
