Insomniac confirms Marvel's Wolverine is fully playable from the disc at launch, months before PlayStation ends physical game production
Sony

Insomniac Games has confirmed that Marvel's Wolverine will be completely playable from the disc when it launches on September 16, with no mandatory download required. The statement carries extra weight given Sony's announced plan to end physical disc production for new PlayStation games in January 2028, making Wolverine one of the last PS5 titles to ship as a complete physical product.

The details:

  • Senior project director Jess Reiner-Reed told Eurogamer at a preview event: "Marvel's Wolverine will come out in digital and physical [versions] and the game will be fully playable on the disc when you purchase it." The studio encouraged players to download the day-one patch, which will contain additional polish and bug fixes the team is working on up to launch.
  • Head of technology Mike Fitzgerald said Insomniac are "perfectionists" who will "squeeze as much out of it as we can" before release, with the day-one patch delivering whatever the team manages to refine. When asked about Sony's disc policy at the event, Fitzgerald said he wanted to keep the focus on the game itself.
  • Sony confirmed its plan to stop producing physical discs despite significant fan backlash and has held its position. Players have already begun expressing frustration in the comments of Wolverine trailers, with physical media access a recurring talking point.
  • Sony has also reportedly begun placing notices on PS5 console packaging to warn buyers that disc production ends in 2028.
