Playground Games has unveiled new details about its upcoming Fable reboot, confirming the game will launch on Xbox, PC, and PlayStation 5 in Fall 2026, and will feature a true open world.

The details:

  • Appearing at Xbox’s latest Developer_Direct showcase, Playground Games shared a deep dive into Fable's gameplay systems, promising a truly open world where players can freely wander, unlike past franchise entries. The studio also confirmed that the game will include the comprehensive character customisation and flexible combat system that the series is known for.
  • The world of Albion will contain plenty of side activities for players to dive into, including a full housing market, romances, and various optional jobs. Playground also aims to have the world consist of a "Living Population" containing over 1,000 unique characters, each with distinct names, jobs, personalities, and daily routines.
  • The classic good and evil reputation system is also making a return, with NPCs responding differently to actions depending on their own moral alignment. Your reputation will also carry weight across the entire in-game world, with evil characters becoming feared throughout Albion.
  • Fable will start out in a similar manner to the original Xbox RPG, with the player growing up in the village of Briar Hill, developing his skills until the unnamed antagonist turns everyone else to stone. Locations and characters from the original Fable timeline will also make an appearance, though Playground has stated that the reboot follows its own story.
