Bungie hopes to entice new players into Destiny 2 with several changes as dev admits problems with onboarding new players

After a decade of struggling to retain new players, Bungie has acknowledged that Destiny 2’s onboarding experience is poor. With the launch of the Edge of Fate expansion, the studio is taking steps to address long-standing frustrations from new users.

The details:

  • Assistant game director Robbie Stevens told YouTuber MrRoflWaffles Destiny 2 has “terrible onboarding” and revealed plans for major improvements. These include reducing intrusive pop-ups and reevaluating how new players are introduced to the game’s systems and story.

  • Bungie aims to keep newcomers focused on core storylines rather than overwhelming them with unrelated seasonal events. They’re also reassessing the New Light experience to make it more engaging and representative of being a “Guardian.”

  • Much of Destiny 2’s original onboarding content has been removed and locked behind the content vault, leaving new players confused. Bungie hinted at future updates that may include a curated “Greatest Hits” of legacy missions to restore context and accessibility.
