Bungie has officially announced that its reboot of Marathon has been delayed indefinitely following a recent controversy regarding the game's use of stolen artwork.

The details:

  • Earlier this year, Bungie was called out by UK-based artist Antireal for not only copying their artwork but also using entire existing designs as textures in Marathon's Alpha build without permission. The studio quickly responded to the accusations, confirming that the assets were indeed stolen, but claimed that it was the work of a former employee and that the game would be checked over for any other potential cases of plagiarism. It was then reported that the company was in "chaos" as it attempted to work its way through the controversy.

  • On Tuesday, Bungie issued a statement confirming that Marathon would no longer be launching on September 23 as originally planned and did not provide any updated release date. The developer said that the voices of the community are "loud and clear" and that it would take time to further refine the game and add highly requested features such as improved AI and combat and better rewards.

  • Going forward, the studio will continue to carry out closed playtests featuring the improvements as they are being worked on to gather further feedback. It also plans to "double down" on the Marathon universe and will share more details about the game's improvements alongside a release date in Fall 2025.
