Update 06/02:

Bloodborne PSX's itch.io page has now been hit with a DMCA takedown request also filed by MarkScan Entertainment.

Original article:

A company reportedly associated with Sony has taken down an old video showcasing Bloodborne PSX, a PS1-style demake of the original PS4 title. However, given that the video has been available for years, fans believe the random takedown is a sign of an upcoming remake.

The details:

  • Last week, Lance McDonald, the creator of Bloodborne's fan-made 60 FPS patch, revealed that Sony had asked him to remove all download links to the patch. While Sony's action against a fan project involving its IP is not surprising, it drew attention because the patch had been available since 2021, and McDonald had even spoken with former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida about the mod.

  • Lilith Walther, the creator of Nightmare Kart (formerly Bloodborne Kart), has confirmed that a YouTube video featuring Bloodborne PSX has also received a takedown notice. The old YouTube video, like the 60 FPS patch, was available for years before being removed by MarkScan Entertainment, which is said to have been hired by Sony to protect its IPs.

  • McDonald has expressed his optimism about what the takedowns could mean, suggesting that taking action against the projects will prevent confusion when fans search for the game online after an announcement. “My copium theory is that Sony DMCAed the 60fps patch and the video about the Bloodborne demake so that when they announce a 60fps remake, google searching for ‘bloodborne 60fps’ and ‘Bloodborne remake’ won’t have collisions with our fan projects,” he wrote on X.

  • It's worth noting that Sony is reportedly planning to hold a State of Play showcase next week, and given the timing of the announcements, a long-awaited patch or remake could be revealed. With rivals Nintendo and Xbox making major announcements recently, the news may be part of Sony's attempt to stay in the spotlight.
