The team behind Skyblivion, an ambitious mod for Skyrim that completely recreates The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in the former's engine, has revealed that Bethesda gave them keys to the official Oblivion remaster and will not take any action against the mod.

The details:

  • Over a decade ago, a group of fans, later under the TESRenewal banner, set out to remake Oblivion using the much newer Creation Engine. The team would aim to recreate every aspect of the original game within Skyrim's engine, including new assets and textures, as well as add new content based on concept art and lore, such as the expansion of cities like Anvil.

  • Following leaks confirming that Bethesda was collaborating with Virtuos to create an official remaster of Oblivion, fans were concerned that Skyblivion would be scrapped at the company's request due to potential conflicts. However, Bethesda has sent the modders free copies of Oblivion: Remastered and confirmed that it has "no intention" of shutting down the project. “Huge thanks to our friends Bethesda Studios for their continued support of Skyblivion,” the Skyblivion team wrote on X. “As massive fans, we’re beyond grateful for the generous gift of Oblivion Remastered game keys for our entire modding team! This means so much to us. Thank you for everything, Bethesda.”

  • Skyblivion is scheduled to release later this year and will require Skyrim: Special Edition, Oblivion, and its DLC content to play. The project's development team is entirely made up of volunteers, and they intend to continue working on the mod to remake both the Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine expansions after the base game is completed.
