Nintendo warns "a significant number of customers" will miss out on the Switch 2 at launch in Japan

Nintendo has revealed that demand for the Switch 2 in Japan is so high that a "significant number" of fans will miss out on the console's pre-order lottery and will most likely be unable to purchase a system at launch.
The details:
In a post to X, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed that over 2.2 million Japanese players entered the pre-order lottery through the My Nintendo Store in an attempt to secure the console on June 5. However, Furukawa states that this "far exceeds the number of Nintendo Switch 2 consoles that can be delivered" and exceeded the company's expectations. “On April 2, we announced the details of Nintendo Switch 2 and began accepting applications for a lottery sale on the My Nintendo Store,” he wrote. “As a result, we received applications from an astonishing 2.2 million people in Japan alone. However, this far exceeded our prior expectations and greatly surpasses the number of Nintendo Switch 2 units we can deliver from the My Nintendo Store on June 5. Consequently, it is with great regret that we anticipate a significant number of customers will not be selected in tomorrow’s lottery announcement on April 24.”
The president also announced that a second lottery will be held, with those who were unsuccessful in the first being automatically entered. However, despite the second chance, participants are still not guaranteed to win due to the number of entries. “To spare those who were not selected in the first lottery sale the trouble of reapplying, the My Nintendo Store will automatically carry over unselected applicants from the first lottery to the second lottery,” Furukawa explained. “However, even with the number of units available in the second lottery sale, we will not be able to fulfil all the applications we have received. We deeply apologize for failing to meet your expectations despite our preparations.”
In response to the overwhelming interest in the Switch 2, Nintendo has stated that it will strengthen the production of units in the future, and that more Japanese retailers will open pre-orders and pre-order lotteries as soon as today to give fans a better chance of getting the console. "With the cooperation of retailers, we will continue to ship the console and make efforts to get as many Nintendo Switch 2 consoles as possible into your hands," Furukawa said. "We plan to continue producing and shipping a considerable number of Nintendo Switch 2 units in the future. We apologise for the delay in our ability to meet your expectations, and we appreciate your understanding."
