Ubisoft has confirmed that Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced surpassed its full-year commercial expectations within 14 days of release. The remake has sold 3.5 million copies, hit the highest concurrent Steam player count ever recorded for an Assassin's Creed title, and handed a struggling Ubisoft one of its clearest commercial wins in years. The result also makes the treatment of Ubisoft Barcelona, the studio that built it, even harder to defend.
The details:
- CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed the milestone in a recent investor call, stating: "Two weeks in, the title has already exceeded the annual expectations we had." The game has sold 3.5 million copies since launching on July 9.
- Black Flag Resynced peaked at approximately 105,000 concurrent players on Steam, a new record for the Assassin's Creed franchise on the platform. It holds an 84 on both Metacritic and OpenCritic, making it the best-reviewed AC game since the original Black Flag in 2013.
- The commercial success makes Ubisoft's treatment of Ubisoft Barcelona, the studio responsible for the game's underwater exploration and technology, all the more striking. The 51 job cuts announced at the studio were confirmed before the game even launched, and the team has been on strike protesting those redundancies since the game's strong debut became clear.
- The result is a significant boost for Ubisoft at a time of serious financial difficulty. The company reported an operating loss of approximately €1.3 billion for FY2025-26. A sequel or follow-up in the Resynced line now appears commercially viable.
