Arkane Studio founder says Xbox Game Pass is 'unsustainable' and is 'damaging the industry

Microsoft forever changed the gaming landscape when they introduced Xbox Game Pass, which allows subscribers to download and play select titles for as long as they are available on the service. Essentially, it is Netflix for video games. However, Arkane Studio founder and now creative director at WolfEye Studios, Raphael Colantonio believes the service is damaging the industry.

The details:

  • Arkane Studios founder Raphael Colantonio took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice his concerns around the 'elephant in the room' following the recent layoffs at Xbox.
  • Colantonio wrote: "I think Gamepass is an unsustainable model that has been increasingly damaging the industry for a decade, subsidized by MS’s “infinite money”, but at some point reality has to hit. I don’t think GP can co-exist with other models, they’ll either kill everyone else, or give up."
  • When challenged on his theory, Colantonio claimed it was a topic too complicated to explain on social media, but he'd be happy to sit down and talk people through how the math doesn't work.
