According to reports, Sony and Amazon are taking the TV adaptation of God of War in a "different creative direction" after the showrunner and writers left after two years in production.

The details:

  • As reported by Deadline, showrunner Rafe Judkins has left the project, along with executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus, after having completed "multiple" well-received scripts for the first season of the show. “The studios are apparently looking to move in a different creative direction, though one source told Deadline the trio’s scripts were praised by both Sony and Prime,” Deadline said.

  • However, the trio's departure has not resulted in the cancellation of the series, which has been in production since 2022. Sources say the companies see the show as an "important asset" for the Prime service and intend to hire a "whole new writers room" to restart production.

  • It is unclear what the plan to take the series in a "different creative direction" involves, but the show was originally intended to adapt the Norse saga told in the God of War reboot. In an interview with Collider, Amazon Studios' Head of Television Vernon Sanders stated that it would be "both incredibly true to the source material and also compelling on its own," and that even those who had never played the games would "fall in love with the show."
