Riot Games has announced that it will not be releasing an entirely new sequel to League of Legends despite rumors but instead creating a full overhaul to address many of the game’s core issues and outdated features.

The details:

  • As announced in a new update video, the project, codenamed “League Next,” will launch in 2027 and provide a major update to the MOBA’s client, which has been subject to criticism from players over several iterations due to its unreliability. Also planned is a complete in-game visual overhaul for its main Summoner’s Rift mode, further changes to gameplay, systems, and runes, and improvements to the overall player experience.
  • Not much else has been revealed about the overhaul just yet, but Riot says that more details will be shared during the League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational and World Championship tournaments, held in July and October, respectively.
  • Originally released in 2009, League of Legends has become one of the biggest competitive games of all time and one of the two largest MOBAs alongside Valve’s DotA 2. It has seen several major overhauls over the years, with a recent update introducing WASD movement for the first time, giving players the option to use a control method that may be more familiar to first-timers to the genre.
