Trails in the Sky developer Falcom confirms it is using generative AI during development
Nihon Falcom

Japanese developer Nihon Falcom has confirmed that it is incorporating generative AI tools into its development workflow, stating that it has sped up tasks drastically.

The details:

  • According to X user Umisuika, during a recent investor meeting, Falcom confirmed that it is using generative AI specifically for scenario brainstorming and research, as well as identifying typos and other issues within its dialogue scripts. However, the developer noted that its usage of the controversial technology is limited due to potential legal issues, as AI is often trained on other copyrighted material.
  • The studio highlighted a significant efficiency gain from using AI, noting that tasks that previously took two to three hours can now be completed in approximately ten minutes. This positions AI as a support tool rather than a replacement for its creative staff, which is a major concern in the industry.
  • AI use has continued to be a topic of debate in the gaming industry in recent years. While many approve of its use as a tool to speed up several tedious processes during game development, some have denounced it entirely. Generative AI, which can generate anything from dialogue to in-game assets to code, is the most controversial form of AI, with Divinity studio Larian recently coming under fire for confirming that it has used it to help create concepts.
