31st Union, a 2K studio led by former Sledgehammer Games co-founder Michael Condrey, has announced its first game, a free-to-play third-person roguelike hero shooter titled "Project Ethos."

The details:

  • Project Ethos was revealed yesterday during a Twitch event featuring several streamers, and the game's community playtest will take place from October 17 to 20 in the US, Canada, Mexico, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy. Players will need to watch an eligible Twitch streamer playing the game for 30 minutes to earn a key to access the playtest.

  • The game will feature a roster of unique heroes similar to Overwatch and the recently shut-down Concord. However, each character will earn "Evolutions," which are several "powerful, semi-randomised upgrades" unique to each hero. "Evolve a sniper into a close-range skirmisher, or a support role into a powerful lone wolf," reads the game's description. "Build your hero in real-time to suit your personal playstyle."

  • The playtest will include two modes: Trials and Gauntlet. Trials is an extraction-style game mode described as an "ongoing, persistent fight to collect cores, extract, and unlock powerful Augments which fuel your future Trials runs." Meanwhile, Gauntlet is a PvP competitive tournament mode in which players progress through a bracket while upgrading their characters after each game, making them more powerful throughout.

  • The final game has no set release date, but it has been confirmed that it will be a free-to-play title and is coming to PC.

  • 31st Union was founded in 2019 under the leadership of Michael Condrey, who served in executive roles at Visceral Games and Sledgehammer Games and worked on many Call of Duty titles such as 2011’s Modern Warfare 3, Advanced Warfare, and WW2. Former Overwatch lead writer Michael Chu is also serving as the narrative designer on Project Ethos.
