Virtua Fighter 5 remaster "Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O." is coming to Steam, Sega announces
Sega has announced that the Virtua Fighter series will make its Steam debut this winter with Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O., a remastered version of 2021βs Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown.
The details:
R.E.V.O has been dubbed "the Ultimate Edition" of Virtua Fighter 5, boasting 4K support, "updated hi-res textures, and more," as well as quality-of-life improvements found in more modern fighting games. This includes the implementation of rollback netcode, which makes online matches fair by reducing overall input lag for both players and has appeared in recent fighting games such as Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6.
According to its Steam store description, the game will include "all the bone-crunching, martial arts combat of the renowned original," as well as classic game modes like Arcade and Ranked, and the ability to create tournaments and leagues for up to 16 players. Players are also able to spectate online matches, and the costumes and other cosmetics from Ultimate Showdown will be included.
There is no set release date for R.E.V.O., but Sega has confirmed in a post to X that it will arrive this winter.
Despite its 2006 release, Virtua Fighter 5 is the most recent installment in the series, which began in 1993, with the first entry widely regarded as the first 3D fighting game. Since 2006, the game has seen multiple updated versions, adding new characters and features, but Sega's head of transmedia Justin Scarpone seemingly confirmed that a whole new entry is on the way in a recent interview with VGC.
