Just a week after its launch, Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake has already become the best-selling game of 2024 in Japan after selling over 826,000 copies across Nintendo Switch and PS5.

The details:

  • According to sales data shared by Famitsu, the Switch and PS5 versions of the game ranked first and second on its weekly sales charts, respectively. The title has sold more than the rest of the top ten combined, with the Switch version selling 641,195 units and the PS5 version selling 185,750 units for a total of 826,945 copies sold, leaving out unannounced sales from the Xbox Series X/S and Steam releases.

  • As shared by @Genki_JPN on X, the game's sales figures place it at the top of Japan's best-selling games this year despite only being on sale for one week. The launch is also the largest in the country since Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom last year, and Square Enix's largest release since Dragon Quest XI in 2017.

  • While Dragon Quest has been a successful franchise in the West, it has frequently fallen behind Square Enix's other major RPG series, Final Fantasy. However, Dragon Quest remains one of Japan's most popular game franchises since its debut in 1986, with physical copies of its entries frequently selling out following their respective launches. This includes DQ 3 HD-2D Remake, which is expected to sell over one million copies in the coming week as more players pick up the game digitally.
