Video game spending in young adults is rapidly decreasing in America

Coming off the back of the news of Microsoft's huge cutbacks and layoffs, a report showing how video game spending among young adults is on the decline is the last thing the industry needs to hear.

The details:

  • A report by the Wall Street Journal (via Gamesindustry.biz) on the spending habits of young Americans has revealed that spending on video games by 18-24-year-olds has dropped by almost 25%.
  • While other demographics have also reduced their video game expenditure, the decline in other groups is less substantial.
  • With games soon set to cost $80 along with rises in hardware costs, combined with the shuttering of so many studios, things could get worse before they get better if the money isn't coming in like it used to.
