Square Enix has acknowledged Final Fantasy 14's long loading times on Switch 2 and says a fix is coming

Just one day after Final Fantasy 14 launched on Nintendo Switch 2, Square Enix has issued a statement acknowledging that players are experiencing unusually long loading screens. The company has identified the cause, confirmed a fix is in testing, and says an update will be released as soon as possible.

The details:

  • The loading issues occur specifically inside instanced duties, and are triggered when a player enters one while surrounded by a high number of other characters. Once the conditions are met, loading times remain slow for the rest of that instance.
  • The problem is most noticeable during battle phase transitions, when teleporting to a different map inside an instance, when reviving after being knocked out, and when using the Return command or a shortcut within an instance.
  • Square Enix explained that the issue stems from data reloading and cache clearing processes that are taking longer than intended under certain conditions. The company says those processes have now been optimised to allow faster loading, and the updated version is currently in testing before release.
  • The Switch 2 version launched on August 4 with a month of waived subscription fees and a 30% discount on the Complete Edition through August 13. A crossover with the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy is also in development for the game.
