With the release of Marvel's Spider-Man 2's PC port this week, Sony has confirmed that PlayStation Network accounts will no longer be required to play its PC games, but those who do will receive additional in-game benefits.

The details:

  • Back in May of last year, Sony announced that it would force PC Helldivers 2 players to sign in with a PlayStation Network account in order to play the game, which sparked outrage as a large number of countries lack access to PSN. It later reversed its decision after community protests, but PC games like God of War Ragnarök would still require an account.

  • However, Sony has announced that the PC versions of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and The Last of Us: Part 2 Remastered will no longer require PSN, as well as previous releases such as God of War Ragnarök and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered.

  • Although PSN accounts are no longer required, players who choose to sign in to a PlayStation game on PC will receive a variety of rewards. These rewards include early access to Spider-Man's 2099 Black Suit and Miles Morales' 2099 Suit in Spider-Man 2, as well as resources like Hacksilver and XP for God of War Ragnarök.

  • It is unclear whether Sony intends to make PSN accounts optional in all future releases, but it has confirmed that additional incentives are on the way for those who use the feature. "Game creators at PlayStation Studios will continue to work on bringing more benefits to players who sign up for a PSN account, so be sure to follow studio channels for more information," Sony's Studio Business Group SVP Head of Publishing Asad Qizilbash wrote in the blog post.
