Rockstar hit with legal claim by union over alleged union-busting following employee firings

The Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB) has issued a formal legal claim against Grand Theft Auto VI developer Rockstar Games, alleging unfair dismissal and union-busting practices following the termination of over 30 employees across UK and Canadian offices.

The details:

  • Earlier this month, Rockstar fired a group of employees, claiming that the individuals affected engaged in โ€œgross misconductโ€ and had shared confidential information within a Discord server. However, the IWGB contends the company engaged in what it describes as "a brazen act of illegal union busting," targeting workers who were organizing for collective representation and improved working conditions.
  • The IWGB's legal team has formally filed claims alleging that Rockstar violated UK law through trade union victimization and blacklisting of union members. Despite attempts at negotiation to resolve the matter, Rockstar declined to meet with union representatives and continued to terminate members of the union "in a manner that is unacceptable and unlawful." IWGB president Alex Marshall emphasized that the union remains confident in its case, noting that "private spaces such as trade union Discord servers have protections, and that their company's contractual clauses do not supersede UK law."
  • The legal action comes amid broader tensions within the video game industry surrounding labor practices and worker protections. The IWGB has stated that "this case stands as a warning to any employer in the games industry and beyond who thinks they are able to act with impunity against organized workers."
