Rockstar Games has stated that its decision to terminate between 30 and 40 employees last week was due to the workers distributing company secrets in a public forum, directly contradicting claims from the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB) that the firings were an act of union busting.

The details:

  • Last week, it was confirmed that Rockstar had fired over 20 members of staff, with Take-Two claiming that those affected engaged in “gross misconduct.” However, it was noted that the employees terminated were all either union members or attempting to organize at the company, according to the IWGB, accusing the studio of union busting.
  • In a new statement to Bloomberg, a Rockstar spokesperson refuted the claims, accusing the former employees of leaking confidential information online, which likely referred to discussions inside a private Discord server focused on unionization methods rather than GTA VI details. "Last week, we took action against a small number of individuals who were found to be distributing and discussing confidential information in a public forum, a violation of our company policies,” the representative said. “This was in no way related to people's right to join a union or engage in union activities."
  • The IWGB disputed this explanation, stating that the only non-Rockstar employees in the Discord channel were union organizers, and maintained that staff were fired for exercising their right to organize for better working conditions and wages.
  • On November 6, Rockstar staff and union representatives protested outside Take-Two’s London headquarters and Rockstar North's Edinburgh office over the decision. Fired staff have also claimed they were pushed out of the company "without warning, without evidence, and without a chance to speak,” demanding compensation and reinstatement.
