Indie publisher Devolver Digital has confirmed that its internal studio, Nerial, has been affected by job cuts, with 40% of its workforce being let go.

The details:

  • In its recent 2024 investor presentation, the publisher confirmed that Nerial had "undergone a team restructure" in order to "address issues around recent releases and better shape the team for future releases." As a result, 40% of its employees have been laid off, though the exact number of jobs lost was not specified.

  • Nerial, which was acquired by Devolver in 2021, is best known for Reigns, a series of strategy games that has become one of the publisher's most successful IPs, generating over $20 million in revenue across five releases, including a Game of Thrones-themed title. In addition to Reigns, it also developed Card Shark and The Crush House, both of which were met with critical acclaim.

  • Devolver also confirmed that layoffs have occurred at several of its other studios since the beginning of 2024, with Polish developer Artificer laying off half of its workforce in February 2024, affecting 28 employees. Good Shepherd and its subsidiary Big Fan Games have also reduced their workforce by approximately 50% over the last year, bringing Devolver's total headcount down from 303 to 270 between the end of 2023 and the end of 2024.
