PlayStation reportedly testing dynamic pricing for digital games

It appears that Sony has been testing a new dynamic pricing system on the PlayStation Store, with users reporting that they have been shown different prices for the same PS5 games across various regions.

The details:

  • As spotted by price‑tracking site PSPrices, it appears that Sony is “randomly placing” users in test groups that provide different prices for the same games on the PlayStation Store. According to the site, API data reveals that this is tied to programs referred to as “IPT_PILOT” and “IPT_OPR_TESTING,” which it refers to as “unusual offer structures.”
  • It’s believed that the experiment started around November 2025 with roughly 50 games across 30 regions but has since expanded to more than 150 titles in 68 regions. The test covers both Sony’s own first-party games as well as third-party releases, including God of War Ragnarök, Astro Bot, and WWE 2K25.
  • Some players are seeing discounts of just over 5% up to over 17% compared to a game’s standard retail price. Meanwhile, others are continuing to see the standard pricing of all releases on the storefront, and it does not appear that any users are being subjected to any price hikes.
  • Sony has yet to comment on the report, but the news has understandably led to backlash from the gaming community. Players have referred to the experiment as “anti-consumer,” highlighting that this could lead to a widespread issue with pricing and general distrust surrounding digital storefronts, with calls to make the practice illegal.
