PlayStation Portal receives cloud streaming for PS Plus Premium members
Sony's latest PlayStation Portal update now allows PlayStation Plus Premium members to stream games from the cloud without connecting to a PS5 console.
The details:
The PlayStation Portal arrived last year, and despite the initial excitement over a new handheld capable of streaming PS5 games, many fans were quickly turned off by the fact that it could only stream directly from a PS5 console. Sony positioned the system as an alternative screen for playing PS5 while someone else was watching TV or in a different room to the console, though it could also be used outside if the Wi-Fi connection was strong enough.
Over a year later, a new update has added the highly requested ability to stream games directly from the cloud without the use of a PS5 console, though the feature is still in beta. However, it is locked behind PS Plus Premium, the most expensive PS Plus tier, and players can only stream a library of 120 PS5 titles with no support for PS3 or PS4.
Portal players will be able to use all of the DualSense controller's features, including adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, and an emulated touchpad on the touchscreen. Games will be streamed at up to 1080p 60 FPS, but a stable internet connection of at least 13 Mbps is required.
Cloud streaming to the Portal does not include streaming Game Trials, store-purchased games, voice chat, game invites for specific titles, in-game purchases, 3D audio, or any use of the Create button. Sony has confirmed that this is only for the beta and that the remaining features will be added in the full release.
