Sony has confirmed that recommended retail prices for every PlayStation 5 console model and the PlayStation Portal remote player will rise globally in early April, blaming the worsening global economy for the controversial decision.

The details:

  • In a statement shared via the PlayStation Blog, Sony Interactive Entertainment said it had taken the decision to raise prices for the PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal worldwide after “careful evaluation,” arguing that the move is necessary to keep delivering “innovative, high‑quality gaming experiences” despite rising costs.
  • From April 2, the standard PS5 with a disc drive will rise from $549.99 to $649.99 in the US, while the PS5 Digital Edition jumps from $499.99 to $599.99 and the PS5 Pro climbs from $749.99 to $899.99, representing increases of at least $100 per console.
  • In the UK, the recommended price of a standard PS5 will move from £479.99 to 569.99, the Digital Edition will go from £429.99 to £519.99, and the PS5 Pro will increase from £699.99 to £789.99, bringing UK pricing into line with new RRPs across Europe of €649.99 for PS5, €599.99 for the Digital Edition and €899.99 for PS5 Pro.
  • The remote play and cloud gaming device PlayStation Portal will also go up in price, rising from $199.99 to $249.99 in the US, with UK and European RRPs set at £219.99 and €249.99, respectively, and similar increases planned for Japan and other regions.
  • This is the second time in under a year that Sony has raised PS5 prices, following an earlier major increase in August 2025. With hardware costs skyrocketing due to memory and storage shortages stemming the rapid development of AI systems, various tech and gaming companies, including the likes of Nintendo, have struggled to keep the costs of their consoles at a reasonable price point.
