Sony has officially announced the formation of Dark Outlaw Games, a new first-party studio led by Treyarch co-studio head Jason Blundell, best known as one of the creators of Call of Duty's Zombies mode.

The details:

  • In a recent interview with Jeff Gerstmann, Blundell confirmed previous reports that he was in the process of forming a new PlayStation studio, where he will serve as studio head and director. The veteran stated that Dark Outlaw is still "staffing up" but has been up and running for "a little bit of time." "It's [currently] about getting the team to gel," Blundell said.

  • Blundell previously led the now-defunct Sony-backed Deviation Games following his departure from Activision in 2020 after 13 years. However, Deviation closed its doors in March 2024, prior to the release of its original IP under PlayStation, due to a "difficult situation" that occurred the previous year. It has been reported that many Deviation employees have now joined Blundell at Dark Outlaw.

  • Nothing is known about Dark Outlaw's upcoming project, but it is worth noting that Sony has continued to move away from its live service strategy, canceling several projects from Naughty Dog, Bend Studio, and Insomniac. It may also choose to play it safe with more traditional projects following the closure of Concord developer Firewalk and ongoing layoffs at its studios.
