Bungie denies rumours that Marathon and Destiny 2 are merging into a single IP

Bungie has moved to shut down a viral rumour claiming that Marathon and Destiny 2 are being merged into one shared IP, with the studio's creative director calling the alleged leak "fake."

The details:

  • The rumour originated from an anonymous post circulating in gaming communities (via Reddit), which claimed Marathon would shift to a free-to-play model, gain new PvE content, and — most explosively — merge with Destiny into a single combined universe.
  • Marathon creative director Julia Nardin responded directly, stating: "The 'leak' about us merging the two IPs is fake." She acknowledged the two games share "Bungie DNA" and have similarities, but said they were designed as separate entities and will remain so.
  • The rumour gained traction partly because Bungie has not confirmed any plans for Destiny 3, and the majority of the studio's team is currently focused on Marathon. Fans had speculated that a merger could be one way to bring new Destiny content back to life.
