Sony’s next major games event is said to be held ahead of Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest and Xbox’s Games and Starfield showcases.
The details:
- According to industry insider Jeff Grubb, the next PlayStation event will take place before Summer Game Fest on June 8 and will be the first of several events from some of the gaming industry's largest companies within a week. Back in February, Grubb claimed that a larger showcase for PlayStation was coming in the summer, and it appears that the rumors were correct, as we're likely to see some major announcements from the gaming giant. This is reportedly part of PlayStation's ongoing "reloading and relaunching" of marketing campaigns to compete with rivals Nintendo and Xbox in generating interest in upcoming games.
- It's unclear what will be revealed at the event, but we expect to hear more about the upcoming Marvel's Spider-Man 2 as marketing for a September release is said to be ramping up. Aside from that, we could see more from Final Fantasy XVI, The Last of Us Factions, and Death Stranding 2, as well as reveals for future PlayStation 5 (PS5) and PlayStation VR2 exclusives. Details about the rumored PS5 Pro and Slim models, as well as the upcoming earbuds and headset, could also be revealed.
- Despite the cancellation of E3, June will be a busy month for announcements. Not only will Summer Game Fest fill the void left by its absence, but Ubisoft has also announced that it will hold its own event, Ubisoft Forward Live, where we can expect to learn more about the Assassin's Creed projects in development, as well as potentially one of the two reported Far Cry titles. Nintendo will still be absent from the lineup, as it announced earlier this year that it would be skipping E3 because it "doesn't have enough major releases ready to show.”
Other recent PlayStation news:
- The Last of Us Part I PC port has been widely panned for its current buggy state, with many players requesting refunds due to constant crashes and stutters. Since then, Naughty Dog has acknowledged the problems and apologized to fans for the game-breaking issues.
- The PlayStation VR2 is reportedly underperforming in terms of sales, according to research firm IDC. The headset has sold 270,000 units within its first month, however, the firm claims that the $549.99 price tag will need to be cut to prevent a "complete disaster."
