Virtuos, the studio behind The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, is laying off around 200 employees despite the game’s commercial success. The cuts are reportedly linked to financial missteps related to the project’s development, highlighting ongoing instability in the gaming industry.
The details:
Layoffs affect 7% of Virtuos’ global workforce (~200 staff), primarily in China and France.
Reporter, Gauthier ‘Gautoz’ Andres explained that the team created a product that didn’t match the royalties Bethesda had agreed to, which made the release profitable for Bethesda, but not for Virtuos.
Developer efforts were described as “over-quality relative to the budget,” making the project unprofitable for Virtuos.
Virtuos is also involved in Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater, the rumored Fallout 3 Remaster, and Cyberpunk 2077’s recent 2.3 update.
