Final Fantasy XIV Mobile is shutting down in September, and its planned global launch has been cancelled
Square Enix

Final Fantasy XIV Mobile, the Tencent-developed adaptation of Square Enix's long-running MMO, will shut down in China on September 30, 2026, less than 14 months after launch. Plans for a global release have been cancelled entirely, marking a swift and costly end for what had been one of the more high-profile mobile adaptations in the franchise's history.

The details:

  • The shutdown was announced by developer LightSpeed Studios, a Tencent subsidiary, citing "adjustments in business operations and changes in the market environment." Square Enix, which licensed the IP to LightSpeed, confirmed the licensing agreement has been terminated by mutual agreement.
  • In-game purchases and new user registrations were suspended on July 17. Customer support and forums will close on October 15, two weeks after the servers go offline.
  • The game launched exclusively in China on June 19, 2025, and never made it to a global release. A worldwide version had been in development but is now formally cancelled.
  • Warning signs had been building for months. The game's official website had been down for weeks before the announcement, and reports surfaced that the development team was losing money on the project daily, with budget constraints putting the global rollout in serious doubt.
  • The cancellation is the latest in a long line of troubled Square Enix mobile projects. The company has shut down multiple mobile Final Fantasy titles over the past few years as the market for premium and mid-core mobile games has contracted significantly.
