Nintendo is said to be preparing a revised Nintendo Switch 2 model for the European market that lets players replace the console’s battery themselves, as the company moves to comply with upcoming EU “right to repair” and battery regulations ahead of a 2027 deadline.

The details:

  • As reported by Japanese newspaper Nikkei, the new Switch 2 revision is being developed specifically for Europe to meet EU rules that will require portable device batteries to be easily removable and replaceable by consumers from 2027. It’s unknown if the system will carry a new price tag, or if it will simply replace the existing models available to consumers.
  • The updated hardware will reportedly allow users to safely remove and swap the lithium-ion battery inside the Switch 2 console itself, alongside new Joy-Con 2 controllers whose individual batteries can also be taken out and replaced using basic tools.
  • For now, this removable-battery model is expected to launch only in Europe, with Nintendo said to be monitoring potential right-to-repair moves in markets like the United States and Japan before deciding whether to roll out a similar revision elsewhere.
