The long-in-development Call of Duty film now has a confirmed creative direction and a release date. The movie will be set in the Modern Warfare universe, directed by Peter Berg, written and co-produced by Taylor Sheridan, and released on June 30, 2028, which coincides with the 25th anniversary of the original Call of Duty game.

The details:

  • The film was first announced in September 2025 by Paramount Pictures in partnership with Activision and Microsoft. The Modern Warfare setting was confirmed in new details released this week, leaning into the sub-series that defined the franchise's cultural peak.
  • Peter Berg, known for directing Lone Survivor and Patriots Day, is attached to direct. Taylor Sheridan, creator of Yellowstone and co-writer of Sicario and Hell or High Water, is co-writing the screenplay and co-producing.
  • The June 30, 2028 release date deliberately lands on the 25th anniversary of the original Call of Duty, released as a PC game in October 2003. No cast has been announced.
  • Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, 2026, meaning the film will arrive roughly 20 months after the latest mainline game in the same universe.
