PlayStation 5 sales hit 61 million units, but console sales have continued to fall
Sony has revealed that over 61 million PS5 consoles have been sold since its launch in late 2020, but despite this milestone, sales have slowed in its first quarter.
The details:
Sony confirmed in its recent financial report, covering the first quarter of its fiscal year 2024/25, that it sold 2.4 million PS5 systems between April 1 and June 30, bringing the console's total sales to 61.7 million. This is a decline from the 3.3 million units sold in Q1 2023 and 4.4 million in Q1 2022.
Despite the drop in sales, the company's gaming revenue has grown by 12% year on year, with an operating income of 32%. The rise is attributed to an 18% increase in software revenue and a 25% increase in network services sales, owing primarily to the success of PlayStation Plus. Sony also notes that the current number of PS Plus subscribers is 116 million, which is two million less than the previous quarter but a significant increase from 108 million in Q1 2023.
Hardware sales have also slowed for its competitors, with Xbox reporting a 42% drop in year-on-year sales in late July, allowing Activision Blizzard's strong performance to play a major part in its financial results this year. Nintendo is also close to releasing a successor to the Switch, which is now more than seven years old.
