Phoenix Labs has announced that its Monster Hunter-like title Dauntless will be shut down in May after the developer laid off the majority of its workforce last month.

The details:

  • As announced on the game's social media accounts, Dauntless will be taken offline on May 29, rendering the always-online free-to-play game completely unplayable. The studio did not provide further details, but it did confirm that the game would not receive any "additional content or updates" prior to the shutdown.

  • Dauntless was generally well-received when it was released in 2019, offering a Monster Hunter-style experience complete with systems that allowed free-to-play players to make decent progress without engaging in microtransactions. However, this changed late last year when an update reversed player progress, removed the aforementioned systems, and pushed heavily for monetization, prompting many to abandon the game.

  • Phoenix Labs, the developer of Dauntless, has also struggled in recent years, with a number of layoffs dating back to 2023. Despite cost-cutting measures such as canceling several projects, the studio announced last month that it would lay off the majority of its workforce. At the time, it was unclear whether Fae Farm or Dauntless would continue to be supported, with the company stating that more information would follow at a later date.
