The details:
- According to games industry analyst Mat Piscatella, using data from Circana, while the PS5 Pro initially saw a strong market entry, the overall hardware spend in January 2025 plummeted by 45 percent compared to the same period last year. Piscatella highlighted "double-digit percentage declines" across all major console platforms, with PS5 hardware spending down 38 percent year-on-year, Xbox Series falling by 50 percent, and Switch by 53 percent.
- In its most recent financial report, Sony revealed that PS5 sales have reached 75 million units, just short of the PS4's performance at a similar stage. Unusually, Sony chose not to separate PS5 Pro sales from overall PS5 figures in this report, complicating efforts to determine if the PS5 Proβs high price has deterred potential mid-generation "upgraders."
- Despite these challenges, the PlayStation 5 remained the best-selling hardware platform for the month in terms of both units sold and dollars generated, with Xbox Series trailing in dollar spend but Nintendo Switch surpassing in unit sales. Back in November, Sony maintained that the PS5 Pro's pricing, despite various criticisms, had not adversely affected its sales.
