Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu believes he will never compose another game soundtrack again
Nobuo Uematsu, the legendary composer best known for creating the soundtracks for the first nine mainline Final Fantasy games, has stated that he is unlikely to compose another full score for a game in the future.

Speaking with Zeit Online (via VGC) ahead of his new orchestral show Merregnon: Heart of Ice, Uematsu spoke on whether he would compose an entire soundtrack for any future games instead of just main themes. "As far as Final Fantasy is concerned, I'm still involved by writing the main themes for the games," he said. "But I don't think I'll compose music for a whole game again. You would have to give it full throttle for two or three years. And I don’t think I have the physical and mental strength to do it anymore.”
Uematsu is responsible for many iconic video game music pieces, including the original Final Fantasy theme from 1987. Since then, he has remained involved in the series' soundtracks, most recently composing the theme for FF7 Rebirth, though the rest of the score features pieces from various musicians.
The composer's most recent full-length project was the soundtrack for Fantasian, an Apple Arcade exclusive RPG produced and written by Final Fantasy creator and longtime friend Hironobu Sakaguchi. During an interview in 2021, Sakaguchi also admitted that Uematsu's days of working on large projects could be over, stating that Fantasian "might be his last record."
