According to recent Federal Communications Commission (FCC) filings, the Nintendo Switch 2 will have a number of new features and upgrades, including compatibility with Amiibo .

The details:

  • As spotted by The Verge, the filings confirm that the Switch 2's right Joy-Con will support NFC, which was previously used in the Switch to scan Amiibo figures and provide additional in-game content. Given that the Switch 2 is backwards compatible, players will still be able to obtain exclusive items and characters in games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on the new console.

  • It has also been confirmed that the console will have improved Wi-Fi connectivity, supporting Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) networks with up to 80MHz of bandwidth, as opposed to the original Switch's Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac). However, the filing makes no mention of Wi-Fi 7 or Wi-Fi 6E, indicating that it will not support the latest standards.

  • While it was previously revealed that the Switch 2 would have USB-C ports on both the top and bottom of the system, a filing now confirms that both can be used for charging. It also states that, like the original Switch, the console is rated for a 15V AC adapter; however, a 20V AC adapter is also mentioned, implying that its new dock may require more power to compensate for improved hardware.

  • There isn't much official information about the Switch 2 just yet, but Nintendo plans to hold a Direct presentation dedicated to it on April 2. During the show, fans can expect to hear more about the hardware, launch titles (including a new Mario Kart), and a release date later this year.
