The first pre-alpha "Labs" playtest for the next Battlefield game took place over the weekend, and despite participants being forced to sign non-disclosure agreements, gameplay has already been posted online.

The details:

  • Earlier this year, EA announced the Battlefield Labs program, which allows fans to sign up for a chance to play the next entry in the franchise at various stages of development. The tests are intended to provide valuable feedback from players on the game's core systems, but participants were required to sign NDAs in order to prevent leaks.

  • Unsurprisingly, not all players followed the rules, with numerous videos of the game appearing online. The majority of the footage plays out on a map featuring a sandy urban environment in the Conquest game mode, with infantry and vehicle gameplay.

  • So far, the footage has shown off some of the equipment featured in the franchise's return to a modern setting, such as AR-15s and RPGs, as well as significantly improved destructible environments. While the game is clearly incomplete, it has already received praise for its impressive audio upgrades, which include explosions that echo throughout the map and the use of classic in-game radio announcements similar to those in Battlefield 3 and 4.

  • It's unclear when EA plans to fully release the next Battlefield, but the publisher has previously stated that it expects to launch the title before April 2026. Until then, it intends to conduct additional tests, with the program expanding to include more players and giving fans the opportunity to play the entry's new version of the Breakthrough game mode.
