EVE Online studio CCP Games rebrands as Fenris Creations after splitting from Pearl Abyss

CCP Games, the developer of MMO EVE Online, has officially rebranded following its recent $120 million split from South Korean publisher Pearl Abyss earlier this month.

The details:

  • Eight years after being acquired by Crimson Desert publisher Pearl Abyss in 2018 for a whopping $225 million, CCP Games was sold back to its management in a $120 million deal last week. The transaction involved $100 million in cash alongside $20 million in "cryptocurrency token acquisition rights,” which is likely tied to blockchain-based EVE Frontier.
  • CCP has now confirmed that it has completely rebranded as Fenris Creations, with the developer being controlled by its board of directors in a similar manner to how it operated prior to the 2018 acquisition. Despite the changes, no layoffs will take place, and the company’s headquarters will remain in Vatnsmýrin, with its offices in Reykjavík, London, and Shanghai also staying open.
  • Google has now acquired a minority stake in Fenris, with the studio providing the Google DeepMind project with an offline version of EVE Online to “test and evaluate models in a controlled setting.” Meanwhile, Fenris will explore using DeepMind to create gameplay experiences.
