Recent Rockstar leak reportedly reveals GTA Online Shark Card revenue figures
Rockstar Games

Rockstar Games recently fell victim to a data breach, and after refusing to pay the hackers, new information regarding the overall revenue of Grand Theft Auto V’s Shark Card microtransactions has been released online.

The details:

  • Last week, hacking collective ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for a recent data breach targeting Rockstar through exploiting a flaw in analytics platform Anodot, stealing what it said was a “large amount” of data. The studio has since confirmed the breach but stated that only a "limited amount of non-material company information" was compromised, which would not affect the development of GTA 6.
  • After Rockstar refused to pay the ransom laid out by the hackers, some of the data has reportedly made its way to the public. According to malware and data breach expert vx-underground on X, among the data were some key figures that provide some insight into the success of GTA Online’s Shark Cards, confirming that they made a total of $5 billion USD between November 2014 and April 2024.
  • Even more mindblowing is that the biggest Shark Card transaction was in 2020, where a single North American Xbox One player spent a whopping $1 million on in-game currency in a single purchase. However, this player was not alone, as the second and third biggest transactions total $984,000 and $953,000, respectively.
  • While some fans assumed that the massive purchase may have been a cumulative figure from an entire day of different transactions from various players, it appears that this is not the case. It’s also worth noting that there are well over 35 transactions, totalling over $500,000 each, according to the data provided.
