EA has officially released the source code for several older Command & Conquer games, as well as support for the Steam Workshop, which will allow modders to create new content for the classic strategy series.

The details:

  • The publisher has announced that source code for the original Command & Conquer (Tiberian Dawn), Red Alert, Renegade, and Generals + Zero Hour has been released under the General Public Licence, which allows players to completely modify the games, including their code. Mods can also be uploaded to the Steam Workshop, allowing players to install content with the click of a single button.

  • With the release of the code, EA updated each game's Mission Editor and World Builder tools, adding the ability to upload maps to the Steam Workshop. A modding pack has also been made available, which includes scripts, maps, and other useful files for all SAGE Engine-powered games.

  • The open source release has been in the works for some time, with C&C Ultimate Collection lead producer Jim Vessella stating that EA was exploring ways to "support the C&C community." The publisher then enlisted the help of veteran modder Luke "CCHyper" Feenan, who had previously worked on the collection, to research improvements for the games, resulting in the update.

  • Valve released the game and server code used to create Team Fortress 2 earlier this month, allowing for more complex mods and complete overhauls of the game. Fans praised the decision as, like C&C, the multiplayer title no longer receives content updates featuring official content, allowing modders to keep the game alive in the future.
