Xbox has confirmed that Playground Games’ Fable will no longer release this year and has been pushed back to 2026.

The details:

  • Speaking on the latest episode of the Official Xbox Podcast, Xbox Game Studios head Craig Duncan has stated that Fable is now slated to arrive next year, although no exact reason for the delay has been given. “So, I just want to start with, really excited, really excited about progress, really excited about where Playground are,” Duncan said. “We previously announced the date for Fable as 2025, we are actually going to give Fable more time and it’s going to ship in 2026 now. While I know that’s not maybe the news people want to hear, what I want to assure people of is that it’s definitely worth the wait.”

  • Along with the announcement, Xbox has shared additional footage from the game's pre-alpha, giving fans a closer look at one of the game's graphically impressive cities and forests. In the short clips, the player can also be seen riding a horse and fighting humans and monsters, including what appear to be Hobbes and a Balvarine. Duncan also claims that what can be seen is "all very playable and very real."

  • Originally announced in 2020, Fable is intended to be a reboot of the classic RPG franchise that debuted on the original Xbox under the direction of the often overly ambitious Peter Molyneux. Despite its flaws, the franchise has a loyal following thanks to its use of British humor and unique gameplay systems, with the reboot promising to deliver everything fans expect in the "most beautifully realized version of Albion" to date.
