Dragon Age trilogy remaster was pitched to EA several times, former BioWare veteran reveals
Electronic Arts

Former BioWare executive producer Mark Darrah has revealed that the studio had pitched a remaster of Dragon Age: Origins, 2, and Inquisition to EA on several occasions, but that higher-ups are β€œagainst” remasters.

The details:

  • Speaking with YouTuber MrMattyPlays, Darrah revealed that despite BioWare's best efforts, there were several reasons why EA has yet to remaster the Dragon Age series in the same way that they did Mass Effect. The producer notes that EA is strongly opposed to remasters in general, having publicly stated this in the past, but that remastering Dragon Age is "unknowably harder" to do than the sci-fi trilogy.
  • Darrah explained that game engine issues were a roadblock to a potential remake, with the Mass Effect trilogy built on the Unreal Engine and Dragon Age split between BioWare's Eclipse Engine and, later, DICE's Frostbite. As a result, BioWare would have to either work on the project in-house or outsource it, which it had considered at one point.
  • Another notable issue is resource allocation, with BioWare split between Dragon Age: The Veilguard and its Mass Effect Trilogy remaster at the time. Darrah went on to say that even if the studio had the resources to work on the remaster, it would be best to focus on a single project to avoid "open warfare over resources."
  • While Darrah did not specify how many times the remaster had been pitched to EA directly, he did reveal that the collection would have been titled "The Champions Trilogy."
