Xbox's next console "Project Helix" can play both PC and console games, Microsoft announces

Microsoft has officially confirmed that its next-generation console is codenamed "Project Helix" and will be capable of running both Xbox and PC games and will "lead in performance."

The details:

  • Project Helix has been officially announced via a teaser posted to social media on Thursday. In an accompanying update from newly appointed Microsoft Gaming CEO Asha Sharma, the company plans to discuss the system with developers at GDC, though no further details have been shared. “Great start to the morning with Team Xbox, where we talked about our commitment to the return of Xbox, including Project Helix, the code name for our next-generation console,” she wrote. “Project Helix will lead in performance and play your Xbox and PC games. Looking forward to chatting about this more with partners and studios at my first GDC next week!”
  • While rumors have floated around about Xbox’s next console taking a hybrid approach to bridge the gap between PC and console gaming for a while, this is the first official confirmation from the company. It’s unknown exactly how and what PC games will be playable on the console, but it’s possible that we could see titles from the desktop Xbox Store as well as other platforms such as Steam and the Epic Games Store.
  • It was previously reported that both Microsoft and Sony were targeting 2027 launches for their respective next-generation consoles. However, due to widespread hardware shortages and major price increases for components such as memory, it’s claimed that both companies will delay the next generation by a few more years.
