CD Projekt Red has announced that Cyberpunk 2077 has now sold more than 40 million copies worldwide, cementing the game's remarkable turnaround from one of gaming's most troubled launches to one of its biggest long-term successes.

The details:

  • The 40 million figure covers sales of the base game and the Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, which bundles the Phantom Liberty expansion; CD Projekt had previously reported 35 million copies sold in late 2025, meaning the game has added around 5 million units since then
  • The milestone was announced on July 3, 2026, more than five and a half years after the game's December 2020 release
  • CD Projekt co-CEO MichaΕ‚ Nowakowski said: "40 million copies sold shows the incredible, lasting strength of Cyberpunk 2077 and is a testament to what CD Projekt does best β€” creating high-quality, immersive stories that keep players returning for years."
  • The announcement coincided with a surge in Steam player numbers driven by the ongoing Steam Summer Sale, where the game has been heavily discounted
  • Cyberpunk 2077 launched in December 2020 to widespread criticism over bugs and performance issues so severe that Sony pulled the game from the PlayStation Store; CD Projekt spent years rebuilding it through patches, culminating in the 2.0 overhaul and Phantom Liberty expansion in 2023, which dramatically rehabilitated its reputation
