Company of Heroes studio Relic outlines future plans following split from Sega
Relic Entertainment

Following its split from Sega last year, Relic Entertainment has revealed its new strategy, which will include developing smaller games while continuing to work on its existing titles.

The details:

  • Sega announced in March 2024 that it would sell Relic to an investment firm, allowing the studio to become independent as the Japanese publisher continued to downsize in the West. This followed a large wave of layoffs in 2023, with the developer announcing additional cuts after regaining independence in April 2024.

  • Following a period of adjustment, Relic has revealed its future plans, which include both new and old games. While the studio intends to continue developing its popular large-scale strategy titles, it will also "actively pursue the development and publishing of smaller-scope, in-house games" involving new genres.

  • The developer will also continue to support its existing game catalog, with new content planned for Company of Heroes 3, including a DLC titled Fire & Steel and an accompanying free update, which will arrive later this month.

  • Lastly, Relic says it intends to "re-imagine" some of its older titles for a modern audience by releasing remasters, remakes, and "brand-new franchise experiences that capture the spirit of the originals while appealing to a new generation of players."

  • Speaking with Game Developer about the new strategy, CEO Justin Dowdeswell stated that Relic is now in a better position after last year's layoffs, and that the plans will not result in additional job cuts. "Our new approach allows us to service our business needs while being in a strong position to react to opportunities in the market," Dowdeswell explained.
